I doubt they're going to enact it for class 10th students from next year itself. What about students who've been learning French or another foreign language for the past 2 years? My best guess is that, if it's being implemented from next year, it'll be enacted for Class 8 students moving into Class 9, so there's no gap in learning.

It's always 3 language for me. 
I studied in CBSE and State Syllabus. 
I had to learn Malayalam English and Hindi.
I was weak in Hindi and till date that continues. 
I have worked with core Hindi speaking people but they never enforced any Hindi on me or neither did I learnt hindi.

What burden? We've always learned three languages, and it’s actually an advantage. Being proficient in Hindi and English makes life and work easier everywhere, both in India and globally. Malayalam, we’re learning locally anyway. Tamil Nadu is just being paranoid. Tamil people  face issues with their language when working outside their state.

Some context: Macaulay's minute being made official was partly a consequence of British insistence that education be secular. This was  inconceivable to Christian evangelicals promoting education in India before the education policy became official.

The focus was on *English*, not Western knowledge and literature. Education in Britain up to that point was almost always religious in nature, with an emphasis on the classics, and Greek and Latin were taught with no reference to the English language. India, however, was to be different - it was among the first places in the world where English literature came to be taught at all levels. Meanwhile, in India, Hindus had made poor choices. And honestly, we still lack clever witty people who are into logical and independent thinking. And this mantra that we are not original or independent is fed to us everywhere. The herd mentality goes on in generations knowing that we are dreamy, victims, and sometimes cowards.

When I was in school, my English teacher used to say that for us its relatively difficult to speak English, because our thoughts come to us in our regional languages, which then have to be translated realtime to English, for us to be able to speak English.

I think most of us already "think" in English, if that makes any sense, so I would say yes, we are well on our way.

If you go to the Cafes and Pubs of Mumbai, Banglore and Delhi, the language you are most likely to hear is English. This trend is only accelerating over the past decade with the easy availability and exposure to English language movies and shows.

Absolutely. It is impossible to translate modern scientific literature or philosophy into any Indian languages without using a lot of English words. This is simply because the majority of the population are scientifically illiterate and hence these languages have no choice but to absorb English words to explain scientific concepts. How would one explain general relativity, astronomy to a population that only knows of superstition and astrology? The languages in India are too tied to myth and have no utility in the modern scientifically and technologically driven world. Many other languages have managed to keep up with the progress of science and philosophy such as German, Russian, even Mandarin and Cantonese. There isn't a single Indian language that is close to keeping up with the modern body of knowledge.

And I will get downvoted for this but scientific literacy in India is only for those that speak English very well which the majority of the population don't do. Even amongst educated Indians, the ones with superior English skills are simply more capable of learning complex topics. Thinking in English becomes important

Already happening with me and I'm barely middle class. I find myself resorting to English over Tamil when i narrate a longer incident. I guess that's what happens when you spend most of the day in zoom calls talking fully in English.

I think there is a high probability that English will dominate the minds of Indians in the next decade or so. OP, you gave an example of countries like South Korea or Germany, that people there use very few anglicized words and even their higher education is in their native language. 

I have two things I would like to discuss i.e. why countries like Germany, South Korea, China etc. are able to use only their native language for most of their work and why India is unable to do so.

1. India has a plethora of languages and some of them have multiple dialects. But, countries like Germany had only one language with a few dialects which was standardized over time. For example, in France, there were many French dialects from the countryside to the cities but during the revolution, French as it was spoken and written in Paris was standardized as the de facto language.
2. Even if we want to use the native languages for all aspects of life, we would need to improve them. Since, we lack vocabulary not only technical but also a lot of day to day words. For example, what would you call a Railway station in your native language ? My native language luckily has a word for it but if I use it, no one is going to understand where I am talking about.
3. In other countries the education is in their native language all the way form Kindergarten to Higher Studies. If we were to implement this in India, it would be a lot of work ; but its possible. Kids of today, are citizens of tomorrow ; if a kid speaks a language at home, uses it at school for education and conversing with their fellow students then I can guarantee that will be their preferred method of communication. (a bit of Political POV : &gt;!Politicians are dirty, they might force Hindi/ Sanksrit down the throats, so be careful)!&lt;
4. The script that the language is written in is quite important as well. Because what good is a language if you learn it but can't use it ? A lotta European languages use the same script for their symbols, which even I find much easier to write and **type.** Typing a language is more important today and in the future ; Lets take Hindi for example, have you ever tried typing Hindi on your phone with the google indic keyboard ? it takes millennium to write something properly with it, so how come no one has developed a better way to write Hindi ? That is what we need to develop for each regional language. Mandarin has a lot of symbols and quite complex and it can take a lot of time to write in it. So then, how did the Chinese solve that problem ? They make heavy use of text prediction (they've been working on this since like the 80s) i.e. their keyboards have all the basic symbols they need and as they start typing a list of most frequently used words which utilizes those letters appears, then the user selects the word from the list and proceeds to the next word. Sounds a lot like autocomplete / autocorrect doesn't it ? but its way better and mature since they have been working on it for like 4 decades now. And now with Machine learning they can improve it a lot.  
We need to learn from them and develop a similar system for Indian Languages or we can change the script but it will take a lot of time and work to convert each language into one script.
5. The government already has a search engine in works ; which uses Indian languages. So they have done some work but not enough.
6. But where is the incentive to use Indian languages ? when all the jobs require you to use English ? This is where government regulation would be required i.e. first the government should make it mandatory for regional languages to used in government offices. (For communication amongst regions they can use English but for each region they should use their own language), then as this is being done, make the same mandate for companies to use regional languages.

Already happening to me. My parents tend to talk to my sister and me only in English, only my grandparents speak Tamil to me. Don't think I don't make efforts to not forget the language, I speak with my friends only in Tamil and same with my grandparents, but still I believe that english will eventually take over in some time. I wish that time isn't anytime soon

Think of the hindi most people spoke and you would find so much Persian in it. Now its just being replaced with English.

Only difference is, now people are finding it easier to type and read in latin letters. Its a by product of the fact that so much signage and materials are in latin letters. Movie posters dont even use Devanagari/local script. That one is on us. 

We also dont come up with new words for things. Ive asked my grandma for certain words in our language and she (very educated) finds that there isnt any word, we just use the english one.

Not going to lie, as a non native hindi speaker that style is super helpful. 

Now some things I will agree other people. Hindi numbers are straight trash. Like who came up with that naming system is an asshole. Hindi also needlessly genders which is super dumb and hard to learn.

I might be a part of this small cohort. My parents' conversation includes 50-60% English, most of my entertainment till now has been in English (a few shows, I used to watch as a kid were dubbed into Hindi) and I prefer English over hindi.

IMO, in germany or korea people prefer their one native language because its just one language (ik dialects existed and slowly it was standardized) but here in India. Each state is like its own country, having their own native language, so its impossible.

Yeah, it is a shame and as a lover of telugu language, am a bit alarmist about it. I lived for a few months in the Basque region, and am currently in Estonia. I chose these regions rather than countries like Germany as an example because they are small in size and the languages have little scope to be used in a person's "career". 
I envy the love and respect these people have for their native languages. Estonia promotes Plurilingualism and most kids are taught Estonian. It is part of the culture and needs to be preserved.

Whereas I don't see the same love or respect for telugu language in my state. And it is somewhat of a shame, telugu is estimated to be 3000 years old. Parents and kids see learning the language as a means to a goal. Oh well, at least we have the film industry that is keeping the language relevant I guess.

The % of people speaking English as the primary language in India is very small, I think. Surely not more than 5 - 10%. I think there are some statistics about how internet usage through hindustani languages has grown massively over the past few years.


I would say that a bigger issue for Hindi is that those who use it as the mother tongue have terrible proficiency. Hindi medium schools are usually bad, so poor kids grow up with poor vocabularies and little reading proficiency. There is very little good media being produced in Hindi. Maybe TV shows and some movies, but no great books. Hence why schools still teach Premchand and translations of Tagore. Some regional languages are better here and still have relatively active literary scenes.

Nope. The influence of Hindi in India is just way too strong for English to ever replace it. 

Eventually everyone will know English in India, just like how everyone in Netherlands knows English. But it will not replace Hindi. 

India, much like Africa is a post colonial society. But India is a very different post colonial society. For one, our history curriculum grains it into us that the British in fact set us back by centuries. That kind of makes the average Indian, even the well to do one not want to impose British culture on themselves. You can make fun of the "coconuts" all you like, but they're simply too few in number compared to the people who are nothing like the British. 

India is a civilization of its own that has accepted English. It isn't the other way round where India's civilization is built around English.

I hope English replaces Hindi as the supposed lingua franca of the country. Then we'll have some chance of saving actual local languages like Maithili, Garhwali, Chattisgarhi, etc.

Very few amount of people will there number in my native language , most of them have already switch in English number .
Usually people from village or elders are the only one use our mother tongue .

This has been happening a lot. We didn't speak Hindi natively either. People spoke languages like Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Khariboli, etc. and now we're all Hindi speakers. Probably the same will happen with English.

I use certain words in English because of I don't know what the word is in my mother tongue. 

I have cousins abroad who know the language, but don't actively use it and I see that happening here, especially with kids who have left their native villages and come to the cities. 

Unfortunately my language has no written script as well, it's either in Hindi or Kannada. 

I honestly don't see it replacing the my mother tongue in the villages and towns where my relatives live, but definitely kids who live in the cities will end up using English as their primary language

Hindi as a language was created to bind the people together. Now English does that job. So yes, there is a big possibility for Hindi to become similar to what Sanskrit is today - taught in schools, but has no real use beyond that.

Though I see the current Govt trying to revive Hindi. I believe that market forces may force people to delegate Hindi as the second language.

I doubt it. What you are referring to is not English replacing Indian languages, but English 'mixing' with them. This mixing of languages is a common phenomenon throughout the history. This is how languages evolve and adapt to the world around (heck, English is perhaps the most 'polluted' language in the world in that sense).

But the lack of interest or looking down upon the Indian language literature is something that should be discouraged. The greatest works in many of the major Indian languages are indeed some of the greatest in the world. Just that there haven't been great translations to get the seal of approval from a wider audience.

The majority of science, literature, mathematics, history, law, etc are written in English. So unless Hindi can fill that gap it's unlikely Hindi will ever be lingua fraca for the majority of people. 


Even in countries like Germany and France when people study science or social science they learn English to access the works of their colleagues abroad. 

I see the future india being divided on two languages. Hindi will overtake all regional languages as a language for family within the house, but outside of it, English will be the dominant language for everything else.
